Embarking on the House Buying Journey

I’m jumping the gun a bit here. Technically we aren’t at the point of actually buying a house. We’re getting really close to hitting our house down payment goal and we’ve looked at random open houses to set our expectations. My husband and I are both super excited though and we’re going to start moving thing along by figuring out the first steps to house buying!

For both of us having a place of our own is really important. We don’t need a mansion or some super deluxe home. In a few years when we start a family we want to be in a steady place. Apartments definitely has benefits with no maintenance and paid utilities, but then you’re surrounded by more people in a smaller space. Since we started working we’ve both been saving money. No definite goal in mind but just for anything that comes up. We didn’t really become serious about saving up for a house until we got engaged. After the wedding we’ve really ramped it up and cut out a lot in our life for our goal.

Here are the next steps we’re going to take:
– Find out what we need to expect and do before house hunting
– Find a reputable real estate agent that will work with us
– Get pre-approved with a lender so we have that in our back pockets
– How much will closing costs and fees end up being?

I’m lucky that I have a few real estate agents in the family. Unfortunately they aren’t in the same state we are in so we can’t use them for our house hunting. I can however pick their brain as much as possible! These steps are just the tip of the iceberg and I’m sure we’re going to have a lot more questions along the way! It’s going to be extremely fun and frustrating at the same time. I can’t imagine it being worse than planning a wedding though!

So wish us luck! I’ve heard some stories out there of super rich people just snatching up houses with cash on the first day of the sale! These people will show up with a case of cash amounting to way over the asking price. Hopefully we won’t find the perfect place only to have no chance of even buying it.
